Fall 2022 Update

TAMIDS Team & Research Affiliates

TAMIDS has a mission to promote research, education, service, operations and outreach in Data Science across Texas A&M. Our Colleges and Agencies are home to a deep bench of Data Science talent. We encourage you to find out more about the 200+ TAMIDS Research Affiliates. Sign up to the TAMIDS mailing list to receive announcements of our events and programs. TAMIDS now has its own facilities in Blocker and is growing its scientific and operating staff. Take a look at the current employment opportunities in our team.

Training and Student Engagement

TAMIDS Training Website features the NIH-supported Biomedical Data Science Online Training Program and other resources for developing Data Science skills. During 2022, TAMIDS collaborated with Prairie View A&M University in the THECB-supported Texas A&M System Consortium for Data Science Credentialing. TAMIDS Data Science Bootcamp attracted over 50 participants during the weeklong program. TAMIDS VIVID Lab provided instruction in the Aggie STEM camp and through industry sponsorship from Chevron supported participation by economically disadvantaged high-school students. TAMIDS sponsored the 2022 Open Source Open Science Workshop. TAMIDS Student Ambassador Scholarship Program made awards to its first cohort of 8 students to support and mentor their work promoting Data Science literacy.

Education Programs

The MS in Data Science degree program (collaborative with the Colleges of Science and Engineering) admitted its second cohort of 32 students in Fall 2022. TAMIDS provides merit-based scholarships for incoming students. The Undergraduate Certificate in Data Analytics for Petroleum Industry (administered by TAMIDS and the Department of Petroleum Engineering) has enrolled 13 students, of which 5 have been awarded ConocoPhillips Data Science Scholarships. TAMIDS coordinates the Capstone and Practicum courses on behalf of academic partners for both these programs. TAMIDS partners with the Texas A&M Energy Institute to support Data Science courses in the Energy Digitization theme of their MS in Energy Program. During the Fall 2022, TAMIDS delivered the graduate course on Fundamentals in Data Science for Biotechnology during Fall 2022.

Operational Data Science

The TAMIDS Operational Data Science Lab works with Texas A&M administrative units to enhance their operations through Data Science, engaging the expertise of faculty and students. Partners have included Research Compliance, Research Strategy,  Transportation Services, and Utilities and Energy Services. These initiatives couple disciplines, theory and practice to act as a proving ground for convergent research.

Ecosystems for Data Science

TAMIDS announced the creation of two further thematic Data Science Labs: the Digital Twin Lab and the Design & Analytics Labs for Urban AI. These join the current thematic labs in Scientific Machine LearningData Science for Social JusticeVisceral Intersensory Visualization and Interactive Design (VIVID). Each lab develops community-based ecosystem encompassing research, education and outreach in their thematics area. TAMIDS supports early-stage strategic partnerships with Texas A&M and external organizations through focus area Working Groups, the first of these being the Urban Hydroinformatics WG in collaboration with Texas A&M AgriLife and the Texas Water Resources Institute. TAMIDS is a supporter of the Center for Approximation and Mathematical Data Analytics.

Research Engagement and Support

TAMIDS Fall 2022 program of online seminars and tutorials includes speakers invited by the TAMIDS Thematic Data Science Labs. Sign up for an online consultancy session for your Data Science research project at our Bring Your Own Data (BYOD) workshops. The Data Science Coffee Connections program pairs you with another researcher for an informal discussion on Data Science. TAMIDS provides proposal support through collaboration, consultancy, and facilities for Data Science research and education.

Funding Opportunities

TAMIDS solicits proposals to support workshops in any area of Data Science, provides support for graduate travel for conferences and study visits, and for visiting researchers working with faculty hosts, or involved in collaboration with hosts and TAMIDS.
