Agricultural Big Data Seminar

October 27 @ 3:00 pm 4:00 pm

Dr. Piush Khanal is a quantitative geneticist currently working for Stgenetics, an industry leader in animal genetics, and a data scientist with over 10 years of experience in agricultural big data, high-dimensional data analysis, and machine learning applications. He has authored 25+ peer-reviewed publications and abstracts and is highly experienced in statistical genetics, experimental design, and genomic prediction. He is also recognized for his leadership in cross-institutional collaborations and mentoring.

Join us on October 27th for his presentation on how integrating large-scale genomics and environmental information has achieved unprecedented levels of accuracy in genomic prediction and computational modeling.

Abstract

Breeding in animal and plant sciences has progressed from traditional pedigree-based selection to a data-driven era defined by genomics, analytics, and precision technologies. This talk explores how advances in big data, genomic prediction, and computational modeling are reshaping genetic improvement: from early marker-assisted approaches to modern precision breeding. By integrating large-scale genomics, phenomics, and environmental information, today’s breeding programs achieve unprecedented levels of accuracy and predictability. The incorporation of gene-editing, advanced reproductive methods, and innovative propagation tools further accelerates progress toward more productive, efficient, and sustainable outcomes. This talk will trace the evolution of breeding science from its historical foundations to the digital innovations driving the next generation of genetic advancement across species.
