The Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS) has joined the Collaborative for Sport Data Science (CSDS) within the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management at Texas A&M. The CSDS is an interdisciplinary coalition of scholars from around the world with backgrounds in economics, finance, information science, sport management and science, and statistics, brought together by their interest in sport data. Other affiliated centers and labs include Carnegie Mellon’s Sports Analytics Center, University of Florida’s Sports Analytics Lab, Samford University’s Center for Sports Analytics, and Texas A&M’s Center for Sport Management, Research, and Education, Huffines Institute, and Positive Sport Organizational Behavior Lab.

The Collaborative’s mission is to provide access to data and funding for faculty and students, and to support industry projects focused on applying advanced data science to benefit the sports industry with data-driven insights. By hosting symposia and guest speakers, the CSDS exposes students to experts in the field and creates opportunities for collaboration.
Last week, Dr. Jonathan Jensen, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management at Texas A&M and faculty fellow for CSDS, and Josh Davila, a senior statistics major and sport management minor, presented research projects at the New England Symposium on Statistics in Sports (NESSIS). This symposium brings together statisticians and quantitative analysts with connections to sports teams, media, and universities to discuss the challenges of sports data analysis and share their current research. Josh presented his poster called “Evaluating NBA Player Consistency through GARCH Modeling.” Using a Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, he was able to calculate a measurement of their game-to-game consistency while taking into account the season as a whole.
TAMIDS is excited to be involved with the Collaborative for Sport Data Science and to see more projects like Josh’s bring together data science and sports. By joining this coalition, TAMIDS is able to support the growth of the data science community at Texas A&M and beyond.
