The Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Shuiwang Ji as Research Coordination Fellow. His appointment spans a two-year term starting September 1, 2024. In this role, Dr. Ji will lead the development and expansion of research communities centered on strategic areas within Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning. Dr. Ji is a Professor and the Truchard Family Chair in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Texas A&M University. He brings a vision of fostering synergies between foundational research and practical applications, in alignment with TAMIDS’s mission to advance data science research, education, and outreach across the university.
Dr. Ji’s first action is the launch of the Research in Artificial Intelligence for Science and Engineering (RAISE) Initiative. This initiative aims to build a robust coordination network at Texas A&M, uniting foundational AI research with scientific and engineering applications. In conjunction with the Fellowship, TAMIDS is supporting RAISE activities, including an AI Lunch Seminar and collaborative workshops to engage students, researchers, and faculty. The ultimate goal is to foster collaboration, identify funding opportunities, and position Texas A&M to secure large-scale research grants.
Foundational AI Research: Encompassing critical areas such as machine learning, computer vision, large language models, and intelligent agents, foundational research is pivotal for advancing AI.
AI for Science: The intersection of AI and scientific research presents transformative opportunities in quantum physics, chemistry, materials science, and more.
AI for Engineering: AI’s application in engineering is reshaping how complex systems like fluid dynamics and aerodynamics are designed, analyzed, and optimized.

As a Research Coordination Fellow, Dr. Ji will leverage TAMIDS’s extensive network and programs to support the development of these communities. His efforts will help shape TAMIDS’s strategic initiatives, programs, and partnerships, ensuring that these communities continue to thrive beyond the fellowship’s duration.
TAMIDS established this program to coordinate proposal development in key AI areas in response to needs identified at the Texas A&M AI Strategy Workshop held in March 2024. Further initiatives and opportunities in this program will be announced in the forthcoming academic year.

Director, Research in Artificial Intelligence for Science and Engineering (RAISE) Initiative
Dr. Ji’s foundational research centers on developing innovative models and algorithms in machine learning and language models. His use-inspired research aims to tackle challenges in various scientific and engineering disciplines, including physics-informed modeling and simulations, biology, drug discovery, quantum physics and chemistry, and fluid dynamics. Dr. Ji received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2014. He also serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI) and ACM Computing Surveys (CSUR). He regularly serves as an Area Chair for the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), and the Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS). Dr. Ji is an advisory board member of the Learning on Graphs Conference (LoG), a Fellow of IEEE and AIMBE, a Distinguished Member of ACM, and a Presidential Impact Fellow and Chancellor EDGES Fellow of Texas A&M University.
