Champions for Data Science Literacy Across Texas A&M

The Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS) Student Ambassador Scholarship Program provides ambassadors with leadership, technical, and training skills, which they practice through engagements in their home departments. This competitive scholarship program aims to help ambassadors become agents of change who catalyze the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and related data science areas in new communities. Ambassadors are Texas A&M graduate students who serve as representatives for TAMIDS and champions of AI and data science literacy in their field of study and across Texas A&M University.

The Ambassador program offers two distinct tracks, allowing students to choose the track that best fits their interests and career aspirations and ensuring a personalized and impactful experience. Ambassadors typically spend about 3–5 hours per week on program activities. Additionally, each Ambassador receives a $2,000 scholarship that qualifies them for the Non-resident Tuition Waiver for Competitive Scholarship Recipients.

Choose Your Track.

Each track has a different focus.
Domain Data Science (DDS)

They are proficient in Python, R, MATLAB, C++, Fortran, or other relevant programming languages, demonstrated through coursework or projects. They also have experience with machine learning frameworks, tools, and cloud platforms.

Generative AI (GAI)

They are experts in the fundamentals, tools, and applications of generative AI and have knowledge of relevant platforms and tools, such as HuggingFace and Ollama. They are also proficient in Python, ML frameworks, and cloud platforms.

What They Do

DDS Ambassadors plan and lead departmental outreach activities with guidance, researcher connections, and logistical support from TAMIDS. They attend two group meetings each semester to share progress, get advice, and collaborate with other ambassadors, with added support available through TAMIDS programs such as Workshop Development grants.

Each ambassador identifies a faculty supporter who helps carry out these activities and provides TAMIDS with a semester assessment. Ambassadors also represent TAMIDS by sharing its resources, referring community members for additional help, recruiting participants to TAMIDS events, and creating content related to their work that can be shared on TAMIDS social media platforms.

What They Do

GAI Ambassadors offer drop-in sessions on generative AI tools and connect students, faculty, and researchers with AI computing and training services, guided by mentors from TAMIDS Generative AI Literacy Initiative. These drop-in sessions are offered two to three times a week, lasting 50 minutes each.

GAI Ambassadors coordinate with each other to offer a broad selection of availability for sessions, meeting monthly with their mentors to discuss progress and support other ambassador activities. GAI Ambassadors will occasionally assist in TAMIDS events when their skills and knowledge are needed.
