International Congress of Basic Science
Dr. Simon Foucart, TAMIDS Associate Director of External Academic Engagement, has received the Frontiers of Science Award in Mathematics from the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) for his publication, “Nonlinear approximation and (deep) ReLU networks.” The 2022 issue of Constructive Approximation features this paper, which explains how deep neural networks can represent complex mathematical relationships far more efficiently than traditional approximation techniques. Collaborators on this paper are Dr. Ingrid Daubechies (Duke University), Dr. Ron DeVore (Texas A&M University), Dr. Boris Hanin (Princeton University), and Dr. Guergana Petrova (Texas A&M University).
ICBS 2026 was held in Beijing, China, and brought together leading experts in mathematics, physics, and information science and engineering. Spanning almost two weeks, this conference featured hundreds of lectures from distinguished scholars and award-winning researchers. The Frontiers of Science Award honors achievements that “are both excellent and of outstanding scholarly value” (ICBS, 2026).
I am honored that our paper was selected for this highly regarded award. I was also delighted to travel to the Huairou Science City in order to accept the award on behalf of all the coauthors and to showcase our findings in front of a wide scientific audience. The paper is especially significant for Texas A&M, as it is the result of a collaboration that took place with all collaborators here on campus.
