Over the course of the last semester, TAMIDS continued to grow the data science community through workshops, seminars, and outreach events, whether with new collaborations or long-standing partnerships. As we look back at the last few months, we are highlighting the people and events that shaped this productive and exciting semester.

For our first event of the semester, TAMIDS and the High Performance Research Computing group hosted the Advanced Computing Workshop. This workshop focused on hybrid MPI-CUDA programming for massively parallel applications on large GPU clusters. The goal was to prepare Texas A&M researchers to use the NVIDIA Superpod purchased by the Texas A&M University System earlier this year. This multi-day event had over 100 participants who were interested in advanced computing and preparing for the arrival of the supercomputer.
As part of the Generative AI Literacy Initiative, a Curriculum-Integration Workshop Series was developed to offer faculty and staff the opportunity to learn about AI resources and their applications in education. These hands-on workshops catered to varying experience levels, from beginners with no prior experience using AI tools to advanced participants with technical backgrounds.
The TAMIDS Seminar Series hosted five guest speakers and had a total of over 150 students, staff, and faculty attend these presentations. Ranging in topics from autonomous vehicles to studying human-AI interactions, the TAMIDS Seminar Series showcases the breadth of applications of data science, AI, and machine learning in a wide variety of disciplines. Our Student Ambassador Program also hosted several seminars with guest speakers from the fields of public health, psychology, and health policy.

Lastly, TAMIDS joined the Collaborative for Sport Data Science (CSDS), an interdisciplinary coalition of scholars from around the world with backgrounds in economics, information science, sport management, and statistics. The Collaborative’s mission is to provide access to data and funding for faculty and students, and to support industry projects focused on applying advanced data science to benefit the sports industry with data-driven insights. By hosting symposia and guest speakers, the CSDS exposes students to experts in the field and creates opportunities for collaboration.
TAMIDS is incredibly grateful for all the participants and event organizers who made this semester’s activities such a success. We are already gearing up for the spring semester and can’t wait to show you what we have in store!
