Data Science Career Initiation Fellow Program

TAMIDS invites nominations of early career faculty for the Texas A&M Institute of Data Science Career Initiation Fellow program. Each Fellow will receive a one-time $10,000 award in the form of a bursary to be transferred to a research account of the Fellow recipient. While the funds are unrestricted in use, candidate Fellows must propose engagements with TAMIDS activities, programs or broader mission that are expected to be undertaken within one year following the award. TAMIDS plans to award six fellowships in 2021. Fellowship recipients should use the title “2021 Texas A&M Institute of Data Science Career Initiation Fellow”.


  • A nominee must be a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the submission deadline date (see below) and have primary affiliation within Texas A&M University (including Galveston and Qatar campuses), TEES, TEEX, AgriLife Research, AgriLife Extension, or TTI.
  • For 2021, preference will be given to nominees who have not previously received funding from TAMIDS under the 2019 Postdoc Project Program or 2020 Data Resource Development Program

Nomination Procedure

  • Fellow nominations should be submitted by the head of the department in which the nominee has adloc 
  • Nominations are limited to one per department
  • The nomination package should comprise the following items:
    1. Cover page listing
      1. Title: “Nomination for TAMIDS Career Initiation Fellow Program” 
      2. Nominee’s name, email address, and department
      3. Nominating department head name and email address
    2. Department head’s nomination letter, 1 page maximum
    3. Nominee statement, 2-page maximum, describing: 
      1. The nominee’s research program, accomplishments, and future plans, and any specific activities that the award would enable
      2. The nominee’s planned engagement with TAMIDS activities, programs and broader goals. Examples could include (but are not limited to): organizing a workshop, giving a tutorial or short course, or outreach activities that broaden knowledge of Data Science within or beyond Texas A&M. Proposals to pilot activities that are aligned with TAMIDS mission but not represented in its current programs are welcome. TAMIDS programs are described at
    4. The Nominee’s resume, 2-page maximum
    5. Up to two additional reference letters, each two page maximum. TAMIDS Core Staff may not provide reference letters; see for current membership
  • The nomination package should be prepared as a single pdf file and submitted by the nominator by email to with the subject line “Nomination for TAMIDS Career Initiation Fellow Program” by the deadline of end March 8, 2021

Review and Awards

  • Nominations will be reviewed competitively by a committee established by the TAMIDS director
  • Awards will be announced by April 23, 2021
